{"id":1073,"date":"2017-09-24T09:37:38","date_gmt":"2017-09-24T07:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/?p=1073"},"modified":"2018-01-04T10:22:49","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T09:22:49","slug":"northland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/gb\/northland\/","title":{"rendered":"Northland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MNklOr0r0Bs\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>After spending most of the <strong>winter<\/strong> in the beautiful area of \u200b\u200bthe Bay of Plenty, where the temperatures were the most <strong>mild<\/strong>, we went back on the road again towards the extreme north of the northern island known as <strong>Northland<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe made a short itinerary with the key points of this region, but also our <strong>unexpected<\/strong> discoveries along the way.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong>Waipu<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1099 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170903_183732_562-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Waipu coastal walk - northland\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170903_183732_562-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170903_183732_562-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170903_183732_562-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170903_183732_562.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waipu.kiwi\/\">Small city<\/a>\u00a0that welcomed us under a sunny blue sky. Nothing really remarkable but a pleasant hike along a quite magnificent <strong>coastal path<\/strong>, as well as a visit to the glowworms <strong>caves<\/strong>. Let us note, <strong>Waipu cave<\/strong> is a magical place for who wants to take itself for a speleologist in <strong>fairy<\/strong> quest. After crossing by two times the subterranean river (sometimes inhabited by <strong>eels<\/strong>), you must reach the second largest cave in the darkness and <strong>extinguish<\/strong> all light sources to enjoy a <strong>sumptuous<\/strong>\u00a0show.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s free, a bit dirty and slippery, but really <strong>mind blowing<\/strong>. A must-have for sure then arm yourself with good shoes and clothes and GO !<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also a large <strong>white sandy beach<\/strong> in Waipu, where it is sometimes possible to surf, and a history museum.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong> Whangarei<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1101 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170915_134635_627-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Whangarei falls- northland\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The northern\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whangareinz.com\/\">capital<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>it&#8217;s\u00a0a big city where you can find everything you need. We only perceived some charms in spite of some <strong>pleasant<\/strong> shopping streets. However, the environment tends to be conserved there, so you can find a multitude of <strong>parks<\/strong> with many paths ranging from small walk to great hiking.<br \/>\nWe discovered the &#8220;<strong>Whangarei<\/strong> <strong>falls<\/strong>&#8221; and took a loop along the river leading to the undergrowth towards the <strong>Kauris<\/strong>, ancient sacred trees.<br \/>\nFurther down the bay, we also climbed <strong>Mount Manaia<\/strong>, which delivers a sublime view of the place. There is also the small 5 km walk on the seafront, borrowed by all the inhabitants at the end of the day, well <strong>arranged<\/strong> and very pleasant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For adventure lovers, do not miss the visit of &#8220;<strong>Abbey Caves<\/strong>&#8220;, a walk leading you to the depths of the earth through 3 caves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Go with good shoes, <strong>frontal light<\/strong> and resistant clothes because it takes a bit of dexterity to survey these slippery and <strong>steep<\/strong> places, with water sometimes up to the knees. Nothing insurmountable to discover these magnificent <strong>caves<\/strong> and the \u00a0glowworms that inhabit there.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it is from here that the majority of reservations and departures are made for all the <strong>excursions<\/strong> and activities of the far north.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1105 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mt-Manaia.jpg\" alt=\"Mt Manaia- northland\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mt-Manaia.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mt-Manaia-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mt-Manaia-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong> Matapouri &amp; Tutukaka coast<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tutukakacoastnz.com\/matapouri-bay\/\">Matapouri<\/a> \u00a0beach is famous for its <strong>clear<\/strong> water, white sand, lying trees, the heat of its water in summer, but also for its &#8220;<strong>mermaid pools<\/strong>&#8220;.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1100 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_20170908_071047_395-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Matapouri- northland\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> Natural pools phenomene, in practice there is only one big <strong>water hole<\/strong> where you can dip, the others are rather stormed by <strong>algae<\/strong> and, to be honest, that was not our favorite part. For us, Matapouri beach is pretty enought, besides, we did not <strong>resist<\/strong> to take a swim there, even in the middle of winter.<br \/>\nA little further on the road we arrive at <strong>Sandy Bay<\/strong>, from where we took the departure of the <strong>whananaki<\/strong> coastal hike, known for crossing the <strong>longest pedestrian bridge<\/strong> in the southern hemisphere. Count 4h return for this <strong>ride<\/strong> which has nothing spectacular, unfortunately the <strong>walk<\/strong> does not skirt virtually the coast. The bridge, although cute, \u00a0has nothing really extraodinary. However, all the bays that make up the Tutukaka Coast are really <strong>beautiful<\/strong>.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1112 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Tutukaka-coast.jpg\" alt=\"Tutukaka coast- northland\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Tutukaka-coast.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Tutukaka-coast-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Tutukaka-coast-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong> Russell, Paihia, Waitangi<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Concerning the charm part, it is on <a href=\"http:\/\/russellnz.co.nz\/\">Russell village<\/a> that we will stop. <strong>Colonial architecture<\/strong>, enclosed in a peaceful bay with its small harbor, its <strong>stalls<\/strong> and its history it is a place where it is good to live, at least out of season. However, we had the feeling that the places are reserved for a <strong>affluent class<\/strong>, despite all, the walkway and the small cafe by the sea seduced us. You will also find there the <strong>French<\/strong> mission \u00a0printing press and tannery of the 17th century, surmounted by our Frenchie flag, as well as the church which still carries the <strong>stigmata<\/strong> of past battles and where you can observe the impacts left by the <strong>bullets<\/strong> on the walls.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1114 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Russell-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Russell- northland\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Russell-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Russell-768x960.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Russell-640x800.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Russell.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Then, we took the <strong>ferry<\/strong> to Paihia, a small seaside town quite touristy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you want to take the <strong>pedestrian<\/strong> ferry between Russel and Pahia, you can count on 12$* return per person. We chose to take the one way crossing with the baby elephant van from Opua for 12.5$ <strong>including everyone<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No big interests, apart from its small <strong>craft market<\/strong> on Sunday morning, and a charming covered alley with some restaurants and stalls. You can do a lot of <strong>activities<\/strong> here, it is one of the most famous places to <strong>swim<\/strong> with wild dolphins.<br \/>\nFinally, there is no point in going to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waitangi.org.nz\/\">Waitangi <\/a><\/strong>except to visit the museum housing the New-Zealand <strong>founding treaty<\/strong> dating from 1840. The history of the first contacts between European and Maoris around informative videos, <strong>show<\/strong> and visit of gardens.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong> Kerikeri<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1119 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kerikeri-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Kerikeri- northland\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kerikeri-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kerikeri-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kerikeri-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kerikeri.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We continue our journey towards two of the oldest <strong>buildings<\/strong> in the country. The &#8220;S<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerikeri.co.nz\/Kemp_House_and_Stone_Store.cfm\"><strong>tone store<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; is an imposing 3 storey building of <strong>stone<\/strong> and wood dating from 1836. On the ground floor it is possible to visit the <strong>shop<\/strong> free of charge, for the upper floors you have to pay an admission to the museum (8$*). This beautiful building is surrounded by pleasant vegetable and <strong>botanical<\/strong> gardens and a small cafe just as unusual.<br \/>\nRight next to it, it is possible to take the departure of several <strong>walks<\/strong> more or less long, and even to walk along the river to go further and discover the <strong>Rainbow falls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong>Matauri bay &amp; St Pauls rock<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1121 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Matauri-bay-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Matauri bay- northland\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>On the way to Mangonui, we took the time of two small stops.<br \/>\nFirst the <strong>majestic<\/strong> Bay of Matauri, the road that leads to it delivers a view of a turquoise <strong>lagoon<\/strong> absolutely beautiful and still <strong>preserved<\/strong>, at least for now. At the end of the bay, we arrive at a campsite and behind it, a small path takes us to the top of a hill where proudly stands the <strong>Rainbow Warrior Memorial<\/strong>. The only attack that New Zealand has ever encountered so far, meticulously orchestrated by the <strong>French<\/strong> government at the time. (youpi -_-)<br \/>\nOur second stop was the St. Paul rock <strong>climb<\/strong> to enjoy, again, a <strong>breathtaking<\/strong> 360 \u00b0 view on an idyllic setting between land and sea, turquoise water, small harbor and greenery islands. A <strong>peaceful<\/strong> and rewarding walk that is not worth the detour.<br \/>\nThe spectacle that we liked the most is still the <strong>appearance<\/strong> of wild dolphins came to have their <strong>breakfast<\/strong> in the bay, to the rhythm of the fishing boats came to deliver their cargoes.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1137 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cap-reinga2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cap Reinga- northland\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cap-reinga2-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cap-reinga2-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cap-reinga2-600x800.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cap-reinga2.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Cap Reinga<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Direction the north end and the <strong>famous<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/int\/cape-reinga\/\">lighthouse of Cape Reinga<\/a>. Northland&#8217;s northernmost point, and the one that marks the <strong>separation<\/strong> between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Certain days, it is also possible to see clearly the <strong>demarcation<\/strong>, we will unfortunately not have this <strong>chance<\/strong>. The trail is dotted with informative tablets of Maori <strong>legends<\/strong> and the lighthouse \u00a0history. It is also possible to take several hiking trails that range from a few hours to several <strong>days<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong>Sand dunes &amp; 90 miles beach<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Let us talk about the two major <strong>activities<\/strong> of the region. On the Cape Reinga Peninsula, along the only road leading to the north end, you will necessarily fall on the giant sand <strong>dunes<\/strong>. It is also possible to find it a little further along the <strong>west coast<\/strong>. However, it is on the ones of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/northland\/places\/te-paki-recreation-reserve\/\">Te Paki<\/a><\/strong> that we have chosen <strong>Sandboarding<\/strong> !<br \/>\nThat is, after hiring a board for 10$ * per person for the day, you are ready for the dunes ascension and for the <strong>sensations<\/strong>. Sitting on the board or standing up, you can <strong>ride<\/strong> on the dunes as you prefer. After finding a good location, alone in what sometimes seems to be an endless <strong>desert<\/strong>, we had fun as kids. This is where the boards are the cheapest. Good quality, good welcome, we recommended it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Second activity, known as the <strong>must<\/strong>, of the area, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northlandnz.com\/visit\/northlands-regions\/top-of-the-north\/ahipara-90-mile-beach\">90 miles beach<\/a>. A very long sandy beach that is only interesting because it is possible to <strong>borrow<\/strong> it by vehicle. At low tide, just drive on it, a lot come to have fun by <strong>drifting<\/strong> on it, gain speed or make donuts in the sand.Seconde activit\u00e9, dite <strong>incontournable<\/strong>, du secteur, la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northlandnz.com\/visit\/northlands-regions\/top-of-the-north\/ahipara-90-mile-beach\">90 miles beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Be careful, however, to be in a 4WD vehicle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some people dared to take the <strong>risk<\/strong> on it, and after to be bogged down, they had only their eyes left to <strong>weep<\/strong> and see their vehicle being <strong>engulfed<\/strong> by the slow rising tide. Aoutch ! Let us avoid dramas.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong>Kaiataia<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/sg\/kaitaia\/\">biggest city<\/a> of the area, you can find there all the <strong>supplies<\/strong> necessary before coming down by the west coast. Apart from that, there is nothing very interesting, you can also go to &#8220;Ancient Kauris Kingdom&#8221; which is a <strong>shop<\/strong> proposing kauris wooden souvenirs and \u00a0where you can discover different <strong>sculptures<\/strong> and a staircase of this same wood.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff8a8a;\"><strong>Koutu rocks &amp; Omapere<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1134 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Koutu-rock-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Koutu boulder- northland\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Koutu-rock-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Koutu-rock-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Koutu-rock.jpg 912w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>After consulting the <strong>tides<\/strong> schedules, small escapade in Opononi to take advantage of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hokiangatourism.org.nz\/activities\/attractions\/koutu-boulders\">Koutu boulders<\/a> path. Indeed, after parking at the designated area, head towards the <strong>beach<\/strong> at low tide to see these strange <strong>balls<\/strong> of rocks. Many legends exist around the &#8220;<strong>boulders<\/strong>&#8220;, these pebbles perfectly <strong>smooth<\/strong> and round, similar to giant cannonballs, it&#8217;s <strong>interrogating<\/strong> as much as it&#8217;s fascinating.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Koutu boulders are much less well known than the Moeraki boulders in the South Island, so do not hesitate to come and contemplate them in <strong>serenity<\/strong>. The tourist activity there is weak, we were alone on the beach to see them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Omapere is a small seaside <strong>village<\/strong>, delivering a breathtaking view of the giant sand dunes.
