As we are not especially fond of these particularly expensive <strong>tourist<\/strong> attractions we will not talk here about <a href=\"https:\/\/raglansurfingschool.co.nz\/\">surf lessons<\/a> at <strong>Raglan<\/strong> (the beaches of Auckland are also beautiful), <strong>glow worms<\/strong> of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.waitomo.com\/\"> Waitomo Caves <\/a>(it is possible to see many caves for free), the <a href=\"https:\/\/otorohanga.co.nz\/\">Otorohanga<\/a> Bird House or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanctuarymountain.co.nz\/\">Maungatautari<\/a> <strong>Sanctuary<\/strong> Mountain.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, we admit we have been <strong>succumbing<\/strong>, despite everything, to the tourist attraction \u21d2 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/gb\/hobbiton\/\">Hobbiton<\/a> \u21d0 in Matamata but we will not miss to make you <strong>discover<\/strong> our itinerary as we <strong>lived<\/strong> it on the roads course.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>Hamilton<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We were not necessarily thrilled by this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visithamilton.co.nz\/\">big city<\/a> that doesn&#8217;t seem particularly <strong>interesting<\/strong>, but since it was on our way, it cost nothing to stop there.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1294\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Waikato-museum-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Waikato museum\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Waikato-museum-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Waikato-museum.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Waikato museum<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>We particularly enjoyed the <strong>free<\/strong> and unexpected visit of the<a href=\"http:\/\/waikatomuseum.co.nz\/\"> Waikato museum<\/a>, located on the shores of the same named river, which offers a mix of <strong>ancient<\/strong> and contemporary collections around the local <strong>culture<\/strong>. Between interactions, sounds and lights and ephemeral <strong>exhibitions<\/strong> we were pleasantly surprised by the <strong>space<\/strong> and the richness of the place. In addition, we had the chance to attend an <strong>event<\/strong>, a concert of one hour of acoustic guitar on the <strong>Hungarian<\/strong> culture, we had a very pleasant time here.<br \/>\nRight next door, don&#8217;t hesitate to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsa.org.nz\/\">ArtsPost<\/a> <strong>Maori<\/strong> Contemporary Art Gallery, just for eyes pleasure.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1295 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Lake-Rotoroa-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Rotoroa\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Lake-Rotoroa-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Lake-Rotoroa.jpg 487w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Rotoroa lake<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>For nature and walks, we first stopped on the perfectly setted surroundings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamilton.govt.nz\/our-city\/parks\/parksandgardens\/Pages\/Hamilton-Lake-Domain.aspx\">Rotoroa lake<\/a>.\u00a0Here, nothing very memorable, but the walk is easy and <strong>pleasant<\/strong>, all the way is perfectly accessible to all, so it&#8217;s possible to go around the lake observing the many birds. There is also a recreation area, a caf\u00e9 and many picnic tables.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1297 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Hamilton-gardens-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hamilton gardens\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Hamilton-gardens-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Hamilton-gardens.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Hamilton gardens<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Finally, we ended with the discovery of <a href=\"http:\/\/hamiltongardens.co.nz\/\">botanical gardens<\/a>. There, hidden on the shores of the <strong>Waikato<\/strong> River, stands the small jewel of the city. In a green <strong>setting<\/strong>, the visit takes us into a <strong>mix<\/strong> of art and <strong>fantasy<\/strong> subtly disseminated through the staging of different spaces. From the Japanese garden, to the Italian style, through India and the vegetable garden, it&#8217;s a magnificent <strong>work<\/strong> that has been realized and remains proudly maintained. A <strong>free<\/strong> visit that is well worth a look, certainly the <strong>must<\/strong> of the city.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>Te waihou blue springs<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1298\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Te-waihou-blue-springs-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Te waihou blue springs\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Te-waihou-blue-springs-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Te-waihou-blue-springs.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>South of Matamata, we made a small detour to see the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamiltonwaikato.com\/experiences\/walking-hiking-trails\/blue-spring-te-waihou-walkway\/\">blue water <strong>springs <\/strong><\/a>of Waihou River. To go there we chose to take the <strong>hiking<\/strong> path along the river, but it&#8217;s possible to reach it faster by the &#8220;leslie road&#8221;. It&#8217;s a <strong>pretty<\/strong>, wide and clean walk that crosses <strong>pastures<\/strong> and bush, without difficulty, to reach the underground spring cradle. It&#8217;s at this point that the eyes are attracted by the <strong>clear blue<\/strong> of this limpid water contrasting perfectly with the <strong>green<\/strong> algae and the external environment. For sure a nice and peaceful time.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>Wairere falls<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1300 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Wairere-falls-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wairere falls\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Wairere-falls-233x300.jpg 233w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Wairere-falls.jpg 309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/>At the Bay of Plenty border, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freewalks.nz\/waikato\/wairere-falls-walk\/track\">Waierere falls<\/a> are as imposing by their <strong>height<\/strong> as by the power of the water which falls heavily over a <strong>vertiginous<\/strong> distance. It takes 45 minutes walk from the car park to reach the first viewpoint which is about <strong>halfway up<\/strong> the falls and which, unfortunately, only gives a distant glimpse of their <strong>immensity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For 45 minutes more, take the effort to reach the top of the waterfall at 153m high, by a steep path, sometimes equipped with stairs, to achieve a breathtaking view of the entire plain down below.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A discovery that we <strong>appreciated<\/strong>, even if we regret the fact of not seeing the falls in itself more closely. This remains a <strong>beautiful<\/strong> spot and a hike punctuated with bridges and trails quite <strong>pleasant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\">Kerosene Creek<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1301\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kerozen-creek-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Kerosene creek\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kerozen-creek-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kerozen-creek.jpg 513w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>South of <strong>Rotorua<\/strong>, on the road to Taupo, give yourself a dip at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerosenecreek.co.nz\/\">Kerozene Creek<\/a> in its <strong>free<\/strong> hot pools! You have to take a gravel track for a few kilometers and reach the end to find the parking. From here, you are about 5 minutes walk from the first <strong>hot water<\/strong> pools then, you can slip into the troubled water and enjoy a bath with the smell of <strong>sulfur<\/strong>. It&#8217;s good for the skin, health, and it&#8217;s<strong> 100% natural<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>However, remember to avoid putting your head under water. Bacterias that grow in this hot water can become infectious in contact with mucous membranes, so avoid diving.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\">Mud pool<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1302 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mud-pool-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Mud pool\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mud-pool-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mud-pool.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A few miles after Kerozen Creek, it&#8217;s possible to go to New Zealand&#8217;s <strong>largest<\/strong> <strong>bubbling mud<\/strong> pool. A well-appointed place where it&#8217;s nice to stop few minutes to appreciate the sounds, smells and the sight of these small <strong>explosive<\/strong> and clay bubbles. We recommend the 5 minutes photo break, just for the pleasure of observing the <strong>phenomenon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>Huka falls<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1303\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Huka-falls-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Huka falls\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Huka-falls-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Huka-falls.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>To the north of <strong>Taupo<\/strong>, don&#8217;t miss the visit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatlaketaupo.com\/things-to-do\/must-do\/huka-falls\/\">Huka Falls<\/a>, right next to the parking area these falls are really worth to stop there. They represent a perfect harmony of beauty and <strong>power<\/strong> that can only force <strong>admiration<\/strong>. The river flows in a narrow gorge between two rocks before falling from a low height, but the <strong>speed<\/strong> that the water takes in this passage and its flow makes the phenomenon <strong>spectacularly<\/strong> powerful. Added to this the rapid and deep <strong>oxygenation<\/strong> of this water which makes it a light blue almost <strong>turquoise<\/strong>. A very nice spot where you can also take the start of two walks from 40 minutes to 2 hours.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\">Taupo<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatlaketaupo.com\/\">Taupo<\/a> and its beautiful <strong>environment<\/strong> make it a tourism hot spot in the North Island. <strong>Privileged<\/strong> destination of the locals, there is a multitude of <strong>activities<\/strong> with varied interests, enough to satisfy all tastes and the whole family from young to old. Swimming or boating on the beautiful <strong>natural lake<\/strong>, rafting, hiking, skiing, skydiving, spa, brewery, restaurant &#8230;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1305\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Taupo.jpg\" alt=\"Taupo\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Taupo.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Taupo-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Taupo-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/>This is the nerve center of this area and where we find the daily <strong>supply<\/strong> points and shops. It&#8217;s also from here that some <strong>excursions<\/strong> start and where you can book many activities including\u00a0 on the <strong>Tongariro<\/strong> national park located 1:15 away.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>\u00a0Tongariro Naional Park<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>Alpine crossing<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>No one can leave Taupo area without hiking on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tongarirocrossing.org.nz\/\"><strong>Mount Tongariro<\/strong> treck<\/a>. We made this walk before the car parks were <strong>limited<\/strong> to 4 hours of parking, so we chose to make the <strong>round trip<\/strong> without taking a shuttle service.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This restriction makes the use of official shuttles mandatory, it will take 30$ * per person to embark on this wonderful hike.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Between landscapes of lava stones, waterfall, red <strong>crater<\/strong>, snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes and deserted plains, this hike is a <strong>must<\/strong> on the North Island. A <strong>breathtaking<\/strong> landscape that is well worth all the efforts of the ascent.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1307 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tongariro.jpg\" alt=\"Tongariro\" width=\"494\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tongariro.jpg 494w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tongariro-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/>We first go through <strong>Mount Ngauruhoe<\/strong>, better known as the Lord of the Rings&#8217;s Mount Doom , beautiful and often snow-capped, then we find ourselves at the top of Mount Tongariro with its red crater and the <strong>emerald<\/strong> lakes that appear on its other side base. Finally we arrive at the <strong>blue lake<\/strong> so pure and so peaceful, it is on its banks, sheltered from the wind, that we took our picnic before turning back to join our vehicle.<br \/>\nWe started this hike at 8am and enjoyed <strong>perfect<\/strong> weather without any clouds on the horizon which allowed us to enjoy the view on Taupo and its lake as much as <strong>Mount Taranaki<\/strong>, also snowy, located on the west coast.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Count between 6h30 and 8h to overcome this beautiful hike with magical landscapes. In addition, check the weather and DOC information regarding these two volcanoes that, let&#8217;s not forget, are still active !<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #eaea00;\"><strong>\u00a0Tama lakes<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1309 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tama-lakes-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tama lakes\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tama-lakes-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tama-lakes-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tama-lakes.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In addition to the <strong>fabulous<\/strong> Tongariro hike, we chose to start the Tama Lakes hike during an other day. This one goes through desert <strong>expanses<\/strong>, by the waterfall of Taranaki and its river to finish on the high and low <strong>Tama<\/strong> lakes.The path can sometimes seem long in this <strong>indolent<\/strong> scenery but it passes between Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom), and the <strong>majestic<\/strong> Mount Ruapehu which offers <strong>magnificent views<\/strong> of these summits. In addition to the environment, the Lord of the Rings fans will appreciate to be on the shooting place of all the <strong>Mordor<\/strong>&#8216;s scenes.
