However, before arriving in town we will stop twice on the pass to enjoy two <strong>beautiful<\/strong> places.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1502 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Haast_pass_otago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Haast_pass_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Haast_pass_otago-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Haast_pass_otago.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Haast pass<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>A small climb of 30 minutes that allows to reach a <strong>point of view<\/strong> on both sides of the pass but will welcome us, unfortunately, under the clouds. We did, however, have a brief overview of the <strong>spectacle<\/strong> that it&#8217;s possible to contemplate there, during few minutes before the rain drives us away. <strong>Cool<\/strong> to stretch your legs but nothing inescapable.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Blue Pools<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1500 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blue_pools_otago-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Blue_pools_wanaka\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blue_pools_otago-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Blue_pools_otago.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Another spot which is, this time, <strong>unmissable<\/strong>, is the stop on a new beauty of the nature. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/mount-aspiring-national-park\/things-to-do\/tracks\/blue-pools-track\/\">walk <\/a>of about thirty minutes leading to suspended bridges above <strong>natural<\/strong> pools of pure blue iced and limpid water.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A magnificent view where some people don&#8217;t hesitate to dive so much\u00a0 the decor is dazzling.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, a <strong>scourge<\/strong> is rampant there, one you can&#8217;t escape on the South Island, sand flies are very present. Also don&#8217;t stop there without a <strong>repellent<\/strong> bomb on you. Apart from this detail don&#8217;t miss this spectacle.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Wanaka<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1511 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Wanaka_lake_otago-e1515568519195.jpg\" alt=\"Wanaka_lake_wanaka\" width=\"220\" height=\"208\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>After crossing the pass and driving along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/my\/lake-hawea\/\"><strong>Hawea<\/strong><\/a> Lake we finally reach the small town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakewanaka.co.nz\/\">Wanaka<\/a> and its lake. Let&#8217;s be honest, if we had to choose between Queenstown or Wanaka, there would be, so to speak, no question about it. Indeed, the discovery of Wanaka and its surroundings was a real <strong>crush<\/strong>. Much smaller, then so much less busy than Queenstown, the environment is a bit less spectacular but just as <strong>pleasant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Roys peak<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Certainly the most famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/wanaka-area\/things-to-do\/roys-peak-track\/\">hike<\/a> of Wanaka, the <strong>ascent<\/strong> of Roys Peak is however not easy. Not content to be <strong>stiff<\/strong> enough, especially on the last part leading to the antenna, it&#8217;s also a walk of approximately 6 hours in an almost non evolutive landscape, which may discourage some. Nevertheless, the point of view at the summit is well worth the effort, and by <strong>summit<\/strong> we talk about\u00a0 the antenna of the peak, not the &#8220;tourists&#8221; lookout a little lower.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No regrets for this one, the sight is a <strong>reward<\/strong> at the height of the ascent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1514 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Roys_peak_wanaka_otago-1.jpg\" alt=\"Roys_peak_wanaka_wanaka\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Roys_peak_wanaka_otago-1.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Roys_peak_wanaka_otago-1-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Roys_peak_wanaka_otago-1-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>The lonely tree<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1510 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Tree_wanaka_otago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tree_wanaka_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Tree_wanaka_otago-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Tree_wanaka_otago.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>After a great hiking day on the Roys Peak, it was with undisguised <strong>comfort<\/strong> that we enjoyed a <strong>refreshing<\/strong> swim in Wanaka Lake. As a result, we also went to meet the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/lone-tree-of-lake-wanaka\"><strong>iconic<\/strong> tree<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A rather curious tree as it grows in the lake at the edge of the bank on a small elevation, it seems to be placed directly on the water which makes all his charm and <strong>singularity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\">\u00a0Rob Roy\u00a0Glacier<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1508 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Rob_roy_glacier_otago-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"Rob_roy_glacier_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Rob_roy_glacier_otago-300x250.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Rob_roy_glacier_otago.jpg 561w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Our unexpected and welcome discovery was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/mount-aspiring-national-park\/things-to-do\/tracks\/rob-roy-track\/\">hike<\/a> to Rob Roy Glacier. It takes not less than 25 km of <strong>gravel road<\/strong> and 9 <strong>dreaded<\/strong> fords to get to the start of the hike, a journey that took us a good hour and a half but nothing that our little <strong>van<\/strong> can&#8217;t <strong>triumphed<\/strong> about. From there a path goes into the woods along a <strong>gorge<\/strong> with turquoise water to climb up to two viewpoints on the glacier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The highest point of view lengthens the ride of 30 minutes but it worth it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We discover there cliffs covered with few <strong>waterfalls<\/strong> and a <strong>breathtaking<\/strong> view of the glacier front.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s finally this glacier that we will have preferred to those from the west coast, much more calm and impressive. A real nice surprise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Arrowtown<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1499 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Arrowtown_otago-300x255.jpg\" alt=\"Arrowtown_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Arrowtown_otago-300x255.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Arrowtown_otago.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We have chosen to join Queenstown by the <strong>charming<\/strong> Cardrona Road, which runs between the mountains along a <strong>flowery<\/strong> stream, and reveals a point of view quite remarkable.\u00a0This didn&#8217;t prevent us from taking a detour to\u00a0<strong>contemplate<\/strong> the <a href=\"http:\/\/waterfalls.co.nz\/waterfalls-by-region\/89-new-zealand-waterfalls\/south-island\/otago\/181-kawarau-dam-falls\">Roaring Meg<\/a> falls a turquoise blue water through the gray stones gorges.<br \/>\nWe also took the time of a <strong>walk<\/strong> in Arrowtown to go back in the past and discover the living conditions of the <strong>Chinese<\/strong> miners who came to the gold quest in the 1800s.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Queenstown<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We are finally and probably in the most <strong>famous<\/strong> city of New Zealand, so the place is also the busiest we have seen so far, excluding big cities like Auckland and Wellington. Of course we went there in the Christmas period and therefore, inevitably, at the height of the <strong>tourist<\/strong> season.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1507 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/remarkables_otago-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"remarkables_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/remarkables_otago-300x258.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/remarkables_otago.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Remarkables<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We will begin by gaining height by taking the ascension of the <strong>mountains<\/strong> overlooking the city, and more specifically by <strong>hiking<\/strong> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzski.com\/queenstown\/the-mountains\/the-remarkables\/the-remarkables-weather-report\">remarkables resort<\/a> ski slopes. We will also go off-piste to reach one of the <strong>peaks<\/strong> without real trail, between screes and <strong>precipices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A little thrill and adventure to reach the radio facilities and discover a magnificent view on Queenstown and its lake.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s also from here that we became <strong>aware<\/strong> of the immense expansion of the city and all the future constructions. The <strong>discovery<\/strong> of Alta Lake on the way, and the point of view\u00a0 from the peak top are, also, beautiful <strong>finds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>City-center<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1519 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ice_cream_queenstown-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"ice_cream_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ice_cream_queenstown-300x203.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ice_cream_queenstown.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Let&#8217;s talk about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queenstownnz.co.nz\/\">city<\/a> itself, besides the industrial area and the booming residential areas, the small town center on the lake edges is really <strong>super<\/strong> nice.\u00a0Almost all the center is for <strong>pedestrian<\/strong> use which allows you to enjoy the place with <strong>serenity<\/strong>.<br \/>\nA perfect excuse for a shopping break and \/ or <strong>gourmet<\/strong>, discovering the city from the inside to finish on the shores of the lake or push to the botanical garden. A <strong>nice<\/strong> little change.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Hill Time walkway<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>If there was only one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newzealandtravelinsider.com\/day-walks\/queenstown-hill-time-walk-new-zealand.htm\">walk<\/a> to recommend on Queenstown, we would probably recommend this one. Less <strong>demanding<\/strong> than other nearby hikes and easily <strong>accessible<\/strong>, the trail leads to the top of Queenstown Hill to get a view of the lake, the city and the Remarkables.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A nice view to discover for less effort and walking time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1521 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Hill_otago-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hill_wanaka\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Hill_otago-1.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Hill_otago-1-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Hill_otago-1-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\"><strong>Bob\u2019s cove<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/queenstown-area\/things-to-do\/bobs-cove-track-and-nature-walk\/\">walk<\/a> that this time puts the lake in the spotlight, <strong>easy<\/strong> and short it just need to take the loop leading to the top of a <strong>peninsula<\/strong> to enjoy a nice view of the lake and the bay. A nice little stop but without much interest.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ecd5;\">Glenorchy<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1501 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bobs_cove_otago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"bobs_cove_wanaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bobs_cove_otago-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bobs_cove_otago.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newzealandtravelinsider.com\/scenic-drives\/queenstown-glenorchy-scenic-drive-new-zealand.htm\">The road <\/a>from Queenstown to Glenorchy is a little <strong>gem<\/strong>, bordering the lake and sinking into the mountains there is something to take your <strong>breath<\/strong> off. You can find a multitude of small stops to picnic or sleep quietly along the way, enough to escape the frivolities of Queenstown.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.glenorchyinfocentre.co.nz\/\">Glenorchy <\/a>itself is a very <strong>quiet<\/strong> place to see, so to speak, almost dead, there are two small walks and the departure for the trails leading to much longer <strong>hikes<\/strong> on mountains, lakes, glaciers and rivers. Although the environment is <strong>superb<\/strong>, we were not really conquered.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, this part of the Otago region is a must of New Zealand&#8217;s South Island. The environment is really special, the <strong>atmosphere<\/strong> worthy of the best <strong>summer<\/strong> holidays, and\u00a0 activities are numerous and varied. We have fully enjoyed some of the different <strong>hikes<\/strong> that the place hosts and hope to be still <strong>amazed<\/strong> by our next stop, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/gb\/fiordland-national-park\/\">Fiordland <\/a>National Park.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s by the Haast Pass Road that we will reach the Otago region from the West Coast with for first objective visiting the city of Wanaka.
