A number that can make laugh and tends to <strong>evolve<\/strong>, of course, every year. In any case, it&#8217;s certain that anyone who <strong>discovers<\/strong> this green country will not be able to miss its flocks of white wool.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>The countless birds\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1749 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/oiseaux_animaux-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"oiseaux_animaux\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/oiseaux_animaux-252x300.jpg 252w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/oiseaux_animaux.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/>New Zealand is also a <strong>sanctuary<\/strong> for birds, a phenomenon that can be explained by this islands <strong>isolation<\/strong> that has kept a good number of <strong>pests<\/strong> out of the way. Even if today some rodents, in particular <strong>possums<\/strong>, have been inadvertently introduced and proliferate, there are no other big <strong>predators<\/strong> to fear. Among all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/birds\/birds-a-z\/\">bird species<\/a> to discover here are oystercatchers, wood pigeons, pukekos, weka, tui, fantails, and for the rarest, but nevertheless <strong>emblematics<\/strong>, the legendary Kiwi, the keas, the kaka &#8230;<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s possible to meet these birds in the <strong>wild<\/strong>, for the lucky ones, but at well-defined geographical and <strong>strategic<\/strong> points.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the points where we were able to meet some of these birds :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1752 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Gannets_animaux-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Gannets_animaux\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\">Gannets colony<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>North Island : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/ie\/feature\/muriwai-gannet-colony\/\">Muriwai<\/a> in Auckland area and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/hawkes-bay\/places\/cape-kidnappers-gannet-reserve\/\">Cape Kidnappers<\/a> in Hawke&#8217;s Bay area. Access to these colonies is free, marked and <strong>protected<\/strong> to be closer to the animals without disturbing them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\">Giant albatrosses<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1775\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/albatros_animaux-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"albatros_animaux\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>South island\u00a0: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albatross.org.nz\/\">Dunedin<\/a> in Otago area and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albatrossencounter.co.nz\/albatross\/\">Kaikoura<\/a> in Canterbury area. There is a paid center in Dunedin but it&#8217;s possible to park there and with a little <strong>patience<\/strong> see the sky giant without having to payIn Kaikoura, if you don&#8217;t take the boat for the open sea, it&#8217;s possible to <strong>see<\/strong> albatrosses from the coastal road and <strong>nature<\/strong> reserve between Oaro and Kaikoura.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\">Penguins<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1761 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Pingouin_animaux-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"Pingouin_animaux\" width=\"223\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Pingouin_animaux-300x288.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Pingouin_animaux.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only in the south island that we had the chance to meet the little <strong>blue<\/strong> penguin and the <strong>antipode<\/strong> penguin (yellow-eyed). Particularly present on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backpackerguide.nz\/5-best-places-to-see-penguins-in-new-zealand\/\">east coast<\/a> between Christchurch and Dunedin, it can also be found in the Marlborough Sounds and on Stewart Island. We <strong>met<\/strong> the blue Penguin at Separation Point in the heart of <strong>Abel Tasman<\/strong> National Park, which is not a common sight, and we met the yellow-eyes Penguin at Katiki Point, a nature reserve where it&#8217;s easy to <strong>observe<\/strong> them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Keas<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1767\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kea_animaux-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"kea_animaux\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kea_animaux-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kea_animaux-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/kea_animaux.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That took us a long time to meet the pretty mountain <strong>parrot<\/strong> yet easily observable on the south island <strong>mountainous<\/strong> points. Bad luck for us, we always <strong>missed<\/strong> them, until that day in Arthur Pass. It&#8217;s on the &#8220;<strong>death corner<\/strong>&#8221; car park that we had the pleasure to discover this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/kea\">colorful animal<\/a> and his <strong>troublemaker<\/strong> behaviour.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Kiwis\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, we didn&#8217;t have the <strong>chance<\/strong> to see them but, for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/birds\/birds-a-z\/kiwi\/\">information<\/a>, it&#8217;s always possible to go to <strong>meet<\/strong> them. To do so, nothing better thant a <strong>night<\/strong> hike in the heart of nature reserves, equipped with <strong>red light<\/strong> headlamps, to observe them without frightening them. For the rest, <strong>patience<\/strong> and courage !<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Marine mammals<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Fur seals<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1754 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Otaries_oiseaux-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Otaries_animaux\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Otaries_oiseaux-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Otaries_oiseaux.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>first<\/strong> time we met New Zealand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/marine-mammals\/seals\/nz-fur-seal\/\">fur seals<\/a> we were in Wellington area at Cape Palliser and we became real <strong>kids<\/strong> again. Then, on the southern island, it becomes almost banal to meet these little animals all along the <strong>coast<\/strong>. Fur seals are suspicious and can become aggressive on <strong>land<\/strong> if they feel threatened, however they are curious and quick to <strong>have fun<\/strong> in the water, so don&#8217;t panic. If you have the <strong>opportunity<\/strong> don&#8217;t hesitate to swim quietly with them with a mask and snorkel. Where we met them: North Island: Cape Palliser, Wellington, South Island: Abel Tasman, Cape Fouldwin, Mildford Sound, the Catlins National Park coast, Nugget Point, Otago Peninsula, Shag Point, Katiki point, Kaikoura &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Sea lions<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1779\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/lions_animaux-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"lions_animaux\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/lions_animaux-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/lions_animaux.jpg 634w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>If they only look like big sand <strong>piles<\/strong>\u00a0 when they are lying on the <strong>beaches<\/strong>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/marine-mammals\/seals\/\">sea lions<\/a> are still impressive because of their imposing size and <strong>power<\/strong> in the water. It&#8217;s better not to be in their way when they return to rest at the end of the day on the beaches, we would clearly not make weight. We went especially to <strong>meet<\/strong> them on the South Island in Surat and Cannibal Bay and also watched them at Sandfly Bay on the Otago <strong>Peninsula<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\">Dolphins<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1781\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hector_animaux-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"hector_animaux\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hector_animaux-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hector_animaux.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had the chance to see and <strong>swim<\/strong> with 3 different <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/marine-mammals\/dolphins\/\">dolphins<\/a> species, one extremely rare since it exists only in this region of the world, it&#8217;s the <strong>Hector<\/strong> dolphin. North Island, the Bay of Island is a famous point, we have seen our first common dolphins in the Mangonui <strong>village<\/strong> harbour. South Island, we met the Hector dolphins at McCracken&#8217;s lookout on the south coast, after that we saw and swim with them at <strong>Curio bay<\/strong>, then it&#8217;s the common and dusky dolphins that we met, this time in Kaikoura.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0490ba;\"><strong>Special insects<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1798\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/glowworms_animaux-e1519880144681.jpg\" alt=\"glowworms_animaux\" width=\"339\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/glowworms_animaux-e1519880144681.jpg 339w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/glowworms_animaux-e1519880144681-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We will not talk here about the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/invertebrates\/weta\/\"><strong>weta<\/strong><\/a>, the biggest cricket in the world, or sanflies that will come to you <strong>furtively<\/strong> and naturally, but rather glow worms. Besides the Waitomo Caves, there are <strong>free<\/strong> places where it&#8217;s easy to see these specimens, such as McLaren Park in the Bay of Plenty.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the places where we <strong>observed<\/strong> them without difficulty : North Island, in the northland at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/northland\/places\/waipu-area\/things-to-do\/waipu-caves-track\/\">Waipu<\/a> Cave, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdc.govt.nz\/FacilitiesandRecreation\/WalksTrails\/Pages\/AbbeyCaves.aspx\">Abbey<\/a> Caves in Whangarei. South Island in Hokitika, after <strong>dark<\/strong>, on the vegetal wall of Dell.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1791 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/orcas.jpg\" alt=\"orcas_animaux\" width=\"339\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/orcas.jpg 339w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/orcas-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In conclusion it&#8217;s not always necessary to <strong>spend<\/strong> miles and heundreds to meet\u00a0 wild animals including glowworms and dolphins. If however you had only one <strong>expense<\/strong> to make, we can&#8217;t advise you too much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sealswimkaikoura.co.nz\/\">swimming with seals<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dolphinencounter.co.nz\/kaikoura\/\">swimming with wild dolphins<\/a> in Kaikoura. On this tour, in addition to the dolphins, we had the chance to see <strong>orcas<\/strong> and albatross, a triple count\u00a0 on this only expense. For those who dream of meeting the whales and sperm whales it will also be necessary to pay for it in Kaikoura but for your biggest <strong>satisfaction<\/strong> and with a 99% visibility <strong>guarantee<\/strong>.
