{"id":1879,"date":"2018-06-10T21:07:47","date_gmt":"2018-06-10T19:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/?p=1879"},"modified":"2018-08-10T09:31:08","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T07:31:08","slug":"les-catlins-otago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/gb\/les-catlins-otago\/","title":{"rendered":"Les Catlins \u2013 Otago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V6I49g-WBmI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>We continue our <strong>road<\/strong> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/southland\/\">Southland<\/a> towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otago\">otago<\/a> area, taking care to go along the the <strong>Catlins<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catlins.org.nz\/\">National Park<\/a> <strong>coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1881\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-1-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-1.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\"><strong>Curio bay\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Our first stop will be at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/catlins-coastal-area\/curio-bay-porpoise-bay\/\"><strong>Curio Bay<\/strong><\/a>, a place where free camping is unfortunately prohibited, but where you can sleep in a DOC campsite. We went there at the beginning of the afternoon, unfortunately the <strong>tide<\/strong> was already high at that time. An informative trail provides explanations on yellow-eyed <strong>penguins<\/strong> and the attitude we should have to <strong>observe<\/strong> them at the end of the day, then ends on <strong>fossils<\/strong> beach. Indeed, Curio bay is a recognized\u00a0 spot for the local fauna observation, but also for the discovery of its <strong>petrified<\/strong> forest encrusted in the rocks of the beach and which it&#8217;s better to discover at <strong>low tide<\/strong>. A nice discovery, which we liked, and even if we didn&#8217;t have the opportunity to observe any penguins that day, we were lucky enough to watch for the second time the <strong>hector dolphins<\/strong> swim and hunt\u00a0 in middle of the bay.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1882\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Curio-bay-2.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That night, we slept in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visit-newzealand.co.nz\/catlins\/waikawa.html\">Waikawa<\/a> to enjoy a nice free <strong>camping<\/strong> site with all the amenities before heading back to Curio Bay in the morning. Indeed, at low tide, getting closer to the <strong>dolphins<\/strong> was easier, so a swim in the fresh morning was necessary to try to awake the interest of these small <strong>mammals<\/strong>, with success!<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1890 \" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Koropuku-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Koropuku-245x300.jpg 245w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Koropuku.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><strong><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\">Koropuku falls<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We leave Curio Bay and its beautiful <strong>inhabitants<\/strong> of the seas to go a bit more deeply in the Catlins park and take the <strong>walk<\/strong> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/waterfalls.co.nz\/waterfalls-by-region\/90-new-zealand-waterfalls\/south-island\/southland\/224-koropuku-falls\">Koropuku<\/a> waterfall. If the place is not of an extraordinary interest, the short walk that leads to the waterfall sinks into a dense and <strong>tropical<\/strong> forest that doesn&#8217;t let indifferent. The trail itself is made of fern <strong>logs<\/strong> that keeps the frame deeply natural and <strong>harmonious.<\/strong> As long as you are the only visitor, there is something to feel like the first explorer of a virgin forest.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\">Mc Lean falls<\/span><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1893 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mc-lean-falls-e1525010046959.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"185\" \/><\/h5>\n<p>Another waterfall will be on our way, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/catlins-conservation-park\/things-to-do\/mclean-falls-walk\/\">Mc Lean<\/a>&#8216;s one, and this time it&#8217;s really the <strong>waterfall<\/strong> itself that will hold our attention. The walk is longer and less interesting than Koropuku&#8217;s trail, but the waterfall is much more <strong>impressive<\/strong> and therefore more popular too.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the water pours into a main chute and flows on a <strong>natural curving<\/strong> stairway. A beautiful place, accessible and really <strong>charming<\/strong> to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\"><strong>Surat &#038; Cannibal bay<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1898\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/lion-de-mer-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/lion-de-mer-300x226.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/lion-de-mer.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We move away from the Catlins National Park and continue our <strong>journey<\/strong> up the coast to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunedinnz.com\/\">Dunedin<\/a>, but not without some other <strong>stops<\/strong> along the way.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visit-newzealand.co.nz\/catlins\/suratbay.html\">Surat Bay<\/a> beach that we decided to stop and start the <strong>walk<\/strong> along the bay by the beach to enounter the sea lions. After parking the van along the <strong>path<\/strong> leading to the only campsite, we started our walk despite the grey weather. We shared our walk with an American traveling alone and saw the first specimens stranded on the sand at the very end of the beach, after about 45 minutes of walking. Faced with these big sloths, which are easy to confuse with mounds of sand, we decided to continue the walk to <strong>Cannibal Bay<\/strong> where, unfortunately, we didn&#8217;t see a single sea lion. Resigned, we decide to turn back, the tide is hight and the <strong>sun<\/strong> begins to decline. It&#8217;s finally just before we arrived to the campsite, after 3 long hours of walk in the greyness and humidity, that we will be <strong>rewarded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1899 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/surat-bay.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/surat-bay.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/surat-bay-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/surat-bay-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple of sea lions just came out of the water in front of us, to spend the night in the land. They block the <strong>way<\/strong> to the parking area and we feel that our presence disturbs them as much as it <strong>intrigues<\/strong> them. We step back to not frighten them and enjoy the moment, we finally meet these giants of the seas in all their <strong>power<\/strong> and their scale. Beautiful ! They will finally give us the passage, embarrassed by our presence, with an entry into the water at a <strong>phenomenal<\/strong> speed and small jumps in the bay. Just <strong>magic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #dbc084;\"><strong>Nugget point<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1903\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/nouvelle-z%C3%A9lande\/feature\/nugget-point-lighthouse\/\"><strong>Nugget point<\/strong><\/a> lighthouse is accessible after a short detour on the road along the coast. This stop is well known not for the <strong>lighthouse<\/strong> itself, which is really not exceptional, but rather for the <strong>view<\/strong> it overlooks. After a short walk from the car park, the path leading to the lighthouse reveals a steep <strong>cliff<\/strong> overlooking isolated <strong>coves<\/strong> that are frequented only by marine animals. At the end, we arrive on a platform that overlooks the sea, the cliff and rocks shaped as <strong>nuggets<\/strong>, scattered like small islets on the sea. A pirates movie setting place that is worth the stop.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, on the road, it&#8217;s possible to also make a stop at <strong>Roaring bay<\/strong> one of the landmarks of penguins, that it&#8217;s possible to see, at the appropriate times, from the observatory set up on the heights of the <strong>beach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1904\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-2.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-2-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nugget-point-2-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here ends our visit of the Catlins coastal area and its beautiful landscapes. We had a <strong>great<\/strong> time along this park, thanks to the different\u00a0 encounters with the local fauna, but also thanks to the <strong>beautiful<\/strong> landscapes surrounding these places.
