After taking the precaution of refueling, we make our way to the peninsula for a day of <strong>endemic<\/strong> stops on this small peninsula.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Tunnel Beach<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1924\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Tunnel-beach_peninsule_otago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tunnel-beach_peninsule_otago\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Tunnel-beach_peninsule_otago-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Tunnel-beach_peninsule_otago.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/dunedin-area\/things-to-do\/tunnel-beach-track\/\">first stop<\/a> will be south of Dunedin, before reaching the peninsula roads, following the steep path that will take us to the rocky <strong>cliffs<\/strong> of the coast and an <strong>arch<\/strong> naturally carved by the sea. The sky is gray, the places <strong>delight<\/strong> us, the strong wind of the sea and the rocks <strong>hot<\/strong> sand tones make this place a landscape worth seeing. Attracted by this <strong>environment<\/strong> we will go for a walk on the arch and will gladly take the stairs <strong>dug<\/strong> into the cliff, representing the only pedestrian access to the beach below. A foretaste that will prick our <strong>curiosity<\/strong> to explore the peninsula.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Portobello road<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We finally enter in the famous Otago peninsula by the <strong>Portobello<\/strong> coastal road.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you dream of an idyllic road for a van trip, this one must surely be in the New Zealand&#8217;s top 10.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s quite simple, we can&#8217;t imagine how we could be <strong>closer<\/strong> from the water. This road, a bit tortuous, runs along the peninsula&#8217;s north coast. It&#8217;s slow way to drive on, first because it&#8217;s dangerous to go fast, then because it reveals a <strong>splendid<\/strong> view over the whole bay of Dunedin. It&#8217;s difficult to stop to take some pictures, but the ride is full of <strong>charm<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1922\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Portobello_peninsule_otago.jpg\" alt=\"Portobello_peninsule_otago\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Portobello_peninsule_otago.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Portobello_peninsule_otago-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Portobello_peninsule_otago-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Harington point<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We decide to follow the coastal road to the <strong>end<\/strong> of the peninsula, Harington Point. There, you can find the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albatross.org.nz\/\">center<\/a> dedicated to royal albatrosses. The entrance to the center is free and provides general informations about the specimen. However, the <strong>observation<\/strong> tour that will take you closer to these <strong>sky<\/strong> giants is well and truly paying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you plan to go for the tour, pay attention to visit it during the nesting and hatching season, to see the adults take care of their offspring.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finding the price excessively expensive, we waited a few minutes to the point of <strong>view<\/strong> next to the car park, to see an adult specimen <strong>hovering<\/strong> rapidly over the center before disappearing.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Allans Beach<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1921\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Allans-beach_peninsule_otago-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"Allans-beach_peninsule_otago\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Allans-beach_peninsule_otago-300x142.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Allans-beach_peninsule_otago.jpg 356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We continue the visit by taking a track which will lead us, this time, along the peninsula southern coast. After a few minutes of this gravel road we reach the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/otago-peninsula-area\/things-to-do\/allans-beach-track\/\">Allans beach<\/a><\/strong> car park. After a short walk we arrive on a <strong>beautiful<\/strong> and wide white sand beach surrounded by rocky cliffs, where the <strong>sea lions<\/strong> come to take a nap. We spent a few minutes <strong>watching<\/strong>, fascinated, these big animals, before leaving the place, outraged by the stupidity and lack of respect of some visitors to the environment and <strong>wildlife<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Sandymount track<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We take back our coastal gravel road before climbing the <strong>hills<\/strong> and drive a little deeper into the land to reach a <strong>walk<\/strong> departure. At the parking a first point of view is accessible after 500m of steep track. The place deserves a good pruning, but once you take a look above the thickets you can see <strong>Sandfly bay<\/strong> in the distance. Nothing extraordinary on this side. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/otago\/places\/otago-peninsula-area\/things-to-do\/sandymount-track\/?region=Otago&#038;parkId=95c7a689-f0ae-4fbe-9bfa-e1b691cca3a7\">walk<\/a> that leads to the chasm is, for its part, of an entirely different interest. The small walk that passes under a pine forest, then through the herds and pastures, is <strong>cute<\/strong> and the arrival to the <strong>chasm<\/strong> quite surprising. Even if it&#8217;s difficult to see the extent of the <strong>fault<\/strong>, it&#8217;s not hard to be aware of its dangerousness, and the view on the bay below is really beautiful.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1923\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sandymount_peninsule_otago.jpg\" alt=\"Sandymount_peninsule_otago\" width=\"970\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sandymount_peninsule_otago.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sandymount_peninsule_otago-300x104.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sandymount_peninsule_otago-768x266.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After this last stop we chose to take the road to Dunedin <strong>preferring<\/strong> not to stop on Sandfly Bay, nor the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larnachcastle.co.nz\/\">Larnach<\/a><\/strong> castle visit that didn&#8217;t seem essential. We spent a small day on this peninsula, which contrasts perfectly with Dunedin&#8217;s activity, and allows a discovery of the <strong>wild<\/strong> fauna and flora near the big city. It&#8217;s a charming aside with <strong>sublime<\/strong> landscapes that is certainly worth visiting when you plan to go to <strong>Dunedin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We leave the Catlins to go along the coast leading to Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula.
