{"id":1982,"date":"2018-08-27T10:49:54","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T08:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/?p=1982"},"modified":"2018-09-15T18:13:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-15T16:13:06","slug":"aoraki-canterbury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/gb\/aoraki-canterbury\/","title":{"rendered":"The Aoraki &#8211; Canterbury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0koV85sJNyA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The <strong>weather<\/strong> looks lenient for the next few days, it&#8217;s time for us to leave the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/dunedin-otago\/\">Otago coastal<\/a> area and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oamaru\">Oamaru<\/a>, after filling up on <strong>food<\/strong> and gas, to head to Lake <strong>Pukaki<\/strong> and <strong>Aoraki<\/strong> (Mount Cook) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christchurchnz.com\/\">Canterbury<\/a> area.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Elephant rocks and fossils<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2008\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/elephant_rocks_aoraki-300x267.jpg\" alt=\"elephant_rocks_aoraki\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/elephant_rocks_aoraki-300x267.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/elephant_rocks_aoraki-768x682.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/elephant_rocks_aoraki.jpg 878w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>With such a name, difficult for us to resist to this stop. Shortly after leaving Oamaru, it&#8217;s <strong>naturally<\/strong> that we decided to make a little detour to discover these <strong>famous<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roamingdownunder.com\/elephant-rocks-nz.php\">elephant rocks<\/a>.\u00a0It&#8217;s in the middle of a private <strong>pasture<\/strong> that we discover these rocks with <strong>voluptuous<\/strong> curves, amusing but unconvincing even if the shapes and hue remind elephant <strong>silhouettes<\/strong>. A little further on a track, another point indicates the presence of whale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/int\/article\/fascinating-fossils-and-rattling-rocks-in-waitaki\/\"><strong>fossils<\/strong><\/a>, again if you are not told about it you don&#8217;t find anything <strong>transcendent<\/strong>. So, after that, we decided to go directly to the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/nouvelle-z%C3%A9lande\/twizel\/\">Twizel<\/a> and Lake Pukaki.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Tekapo lake<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/tekapo_aoraki-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"tekapo_aoraki\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/tekapo_aoraki-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/tekapo_aoraki-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/tekapo_aoraki.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>We spend our first night in the Canterbury area in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rankers.co.nz\/experiences\/5400-Lake_Wardell_Rest_Area_Twizel_\">Wardell lake<\/a> free campsite, under a pretty <strong>pine forest<\/strong> where many rabbits run. The next day, the weather has changed and it appears that the Mont cook will remain <strong>foggy<\/strong> all day long. Never mind, we adapt our program to take the departure of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.fr\/Attraction_Review-g644415-d13439199-Reviews-Peninsula_Walkway-Lake_Tekapo_Mackenzie_District_Canterbury_Region_South_Island.html\">peninsula<\/a><\/strong> walk on the lake <strong>Tekapo&#8217;<\/strong>s shores, a <strong>nice<\/strong> path without landscape variations. However, the <strong>beauty<\/strong> of the place and the <strong>turquoise<\/strong> blue color of the lake&#8217;s waters are <strong>breathtaking<\/strong> and quite enough to enjoy the walk. We also found a nice little place not far from there, to picnic on the roof of the van taking advantage of the <strong>view<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/van_aoraki.jpg\" alt=\"van_aoraki\" width=\"1080\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/van_aoraki.jpg 1080w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/van_aoraki-300x96.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/van_aoraki-768x245.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/van_aoraki-1024x327.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Breamar road<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2031\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/braemarroad_aoraki-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"braemarroad_aoraki\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/braemarroad_aoraki-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/braemarroad_aoraki.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In the afternoon, we decide to ride a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teararoa.org.nz\/canterbury\/tekapo-pukaki\/\"><strong>gravel road<\/strong><\/a> that is notified as being of interest for the beautiful <strong>landscapes<\/strong> lovers. A road that took us a while, but really <strong>pretty<\/strong>.\u00a0We meander along a wide track through the private grounds strewn with a few large farms and herds, then, in the distance, slowly appear the <strong>mountain<\/strong> ranges surrounding Mount Cook. There are some <strong>views<\/strong> that deserve a photo stop, then the road ends on the shores of the <strong>Pukaki<\/strong> lake with the famous Aoraki in the background.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Pukaki lake<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>It&#8217;s along the <strong>shores<\/strong> from the Breamar road to Pukaki that we found some <strong>beautiful<\/strong> free camp spots. We had a small swim in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mackenzienz.com\/destinations\/lake-pukaki\/\">frozen blue <strong>lake<\/strong><\/a>, meal with orange sunset lights on the mountains and taht was an ideal place to observe the <strong>twinkling<\/strong> stars. The dream !<br \/>\nThe day after, the weather was on our side and we decided to go greet the <strong>Aoraki<\/strong>, commonly known as Mont cook. We headed to the Aoraki village, where you can park to start the various hikes around the mount. The <strong>road<\/strong> that lead to the hikes departure runs along Pukaki lake on its entire length and delivers absolutely <strong>breathtaking<\/strong> views.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2032\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/aoraki_road.jpg\" alt=\"aoraki_road\" width=\"1080\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/aoraki_road.jpg 1080w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/aoraki_road-300x96.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/aoraki_road-768x245.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/aoraki_road-1024x327.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Aoraki\/ Mount cook<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2039\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/mueller_lake_aoraki-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"mueller_lake_aoraki\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/mueller_lake_aoraki-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/mueller_lake_aoraki.jpg 546w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>After parking in <a href=\"https:\/\/mackenzienz.com\/destinations\/aoraki-mount-cook-village\/\">Aoraki village<\/a>, which is already in a <strong>spectacular<\/strong> and privileged environment, we quickly took the start of the hike of the <strong>Mount cook<\/strong>, with a determined step to escape the tourist bus. The walk itself doen&#8217;t require physical training but takes you cross landscapes of rare <strong>intensity<\/strong>. \u00a0The entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/canterbury\/places\/aoraki-mount-cook-national-park\/things-to-do\/tracks\/hooker-valley-track\/\">Hooker Valley<\/a>, from <strong>Mueller Lake<\/strong> overhung by glaciers to <strong>Hooker Lake<\/strong> below Mount Cook, is a treat. We literally let ourselves absorbed by the <strong>magnificence<\/strong>, the splendor and the immensity of the snow-capped mountains. Between hanging bridges, glaciers, lakes and powerful rivers, even the cloud that will remain planted on the mount Cook top at our arrival will not tarnish the <strong>emotion<\/strong> that has invaded us all along this journey. How wonderful !<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Tasman glacier lake<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2043\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tasman_Aoraki-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tasman_Aoraki\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tasman_Aoraki-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tasman_Aoraki.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>After a picnic in Aoraki village, we decided to hit the road to take the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasman_Lake\">Tasman Lake<\/a> walk and its point of view. After <strong>climbing<\/strong> a few steps you will find a <strong>viewpoint<\/strong> overlooking the entire valley as well as Tasman Lake. Unfortunately, there is nothing <strong>blue<\/strong> here anymore because of the rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/canterbury\/places\/aoraki-mount-cook-national-park\/things-to-do\/tracks\/blue-lakes-and-tasman-glacier-walks\/\">melting of the glacier<\/a>, which is no longer present enough to bring its <strong>polar<\/strong> color to the water. It&#8217;s also a terrible twinge in our heart to see with our own eyes the <strong>extent<\/strong> of global warming on the planet. We had already observed it on the previous glaciers visited, but the Tasman Lake glacier leaves a huge dusty crater that is easy to contemplate such as a <strong>gigantic<\/strong> scar in this wonderful scenery.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2048\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/garage66_aoraki-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"garage66_aoraki\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/garage66_aoraki-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/garage66_aoraki.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>We spent another night contemplating the particularly spectacular <strong>starry<\/strong> sky from the Lake Pukaki shores. There is also an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthandsky.co.nz\/night-tours\/mt-john-observatory-tour\">observatory<\/a> on the Lake Tekapo outskirts, whith entrance fee, for <strong>astronomy<\/strong> enthusiasts.\u00a0Then we took the road to Christchurch for refueling before going for an unplanned loop to the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.fr\/Attractions-g658475-Activities-Arthur_s_Pass_National_Park_Canterbury_Region_South_Island.html\">Arhur pass<\/a> National Park. On the road we only made a short stop at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/threecreeks.co.nz\/shop\/cat\/garage\"><strong>Garage 66<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; a charming place in the American style between collector&#8217;s pieces and <strong>woodcarvers<\/strong>&#8216;s skills.
