On the road we will make only a few minor stops and a <strong>stopover<\/strong> on the spa city of <a href=\"https:\/\/hanmersprings.co.nz\/\">Hanmer spring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Hanmer Spring<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2106\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HanmerSprings_Kaikoura-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"HanmerSprings_Kaikoura\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HanmerSprings_Kaikoura-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HanmerSprings_Kaikoura-639x800.jpg 639w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/HanmerSprings_Kaikoura.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>This city is one of the most <strong>famous<\/strong> of New Zealand for who wants to engage in the pleasure of a <strong>thalassotherapy<\/strong>. Indeed, many Kiwis flood there with only one intention, to <strong>recharge<\/strong>. It must be said that in addition to the center of thermal pools and spa perfectly equipped, the environment is conducive to relaxation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Surrounded by mountains of giant redwood forests and river, <a href=\"https:\/\/visithanmersprings.co.nz\/\">Hanmer springs<\/a> is a small town perfect to combine relaxation, outdoor <strong>activities<\/strong> and pleasures, as long as the <strong>budget<\/strong> follows.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Having the intention to keep our money for the attractions in Kaikoura we will take advantage of the area during a short <strong>hike<\/strong> leading to a waterfall, and having a drink on a shady terrace, just to immerse ourself in the <strong>sweetness<\/strong> of places.<br \/>\nAfter a visit of the city and a night on a well equipped free camp in the forest, we can only understand the <strong>enthusiasm<\/strong> of the locals for these soothing places, where it&#8217;s also possible to <strong>have fun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Kaikoura<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s now time to head to the city of Kaikoura with, it must be said, some <strong>excitation<\/strong> feeling. Indeed, the Kaikoura and its <strong>peninsula<\/strong> reputation is well established, the region is nationally known as a wildlife &#8220;hotspot&#8221; in <strong>New Zealand<\/strong>. Also, we know, for sure, that we are on our way for some of the city&#8217;s <strong>activities<\/strong>, to live <strong>magical<\/strong> moments.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The city<\/span> <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2116\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"City_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura-300x208.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura-768x532.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura-1024x709.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura-1156x800.jpg 1156w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/City_Kaikoura.jpg 1433w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Arriving at the scene, we are surprised to find that Kaikoura is really <strong>small<\/strong>. What appears to be the downtown is only a few shops on a hundred meters, it&#8217;s actually a tiny seaside <strong>village<\/strong> of just 2000 residents. In addition, some buildings keep severe <strong>stigmatas<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_Kaikoura_earthquake\">earthquake<\/a> that put the city in quarantine in 2016 and killed 2 people. Moreover, at the time of our visit (2018), the roads leading to Kaikoura are still subject to enormous <strong>renovation work<\/strong>, which makes access tedious. A real blow for its inhabitants who live mainly from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attractions-g255374-Activities-Kaikoura_Canterbury_Region_South_Island.html\">tourist activities<\/a><\/strong>. Once you get over the initial surprise, we are also <strong>aware<\/strong> that this little human concentration, it&#8217;s certainly what allows Kaikoura to remain a local fauna sanctuary, and that it&#8217;s necessarily very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attractions-g255374-Activities-Kaikoura_Canterbury_Region_South_Island.html\">positive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The Peninsula<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2120\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Peninsula_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Peninsula_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Peninsula_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Peninsula_Kaikoura.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In order to appreciate the full extent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/marlborough\/places\/kaikoura-area\/things-to-do\/tracks\/kaikoura-peninsula-walkway\/\">Kaikoura&#8217;s Peninsula<\/a>, a walking <strong>trail<\/strong> has been set up which pass both by beaches or <strong>cliffs<\/strong>. This trail also passes sacred lands which are <strong>Maori<\/strong> properties and protected areas for birds. It&#8217;s a <strong>nice<\/strong> hike where we enjoy beautiful <strong>views<\/strong> of the south coast, but also the city itself. In addition to the birds, there is an arm of rock, north of the peninsula, which extends into the sea where many <strong>fur seals<\/strong> reside and have the habit to catch some rays, lying quietly in the sun.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Be careful, however, this piece of rocky peninsula is no longer accessible at high tide, check schedules if you don&#8217;t want to wet your feet or go back swimming.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Activities<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2127\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activities_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Activities_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activities_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activities_Kaikoura.jpg 513w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>If Kaikoura is home to so many New Zealand wild <strong>animals<\/strong> it&#8217;s because of its <strong>environment<\/strong>. There are so many walks and great hikes in the area, both at the seaside and at the peaks of the <strong>mountains<\/strong> that encircle the city. Marine animals are also grouped there thanks to the presence of a vertiginous underwater <strong>canyon<\/strong>. In resume everything is there for our little and big friends to feel good. Also, most of the tourist activities are based on <strong>encounters<\/strong> with local wildlife. Sperm whales, albatross, fur seals, dolphins, whether by boat, plane, swimming, everything is done to bring people closer of them while learning to <strong>respect<\/strong> as much as possible the environment and the needs of everyone. Also, we will not hide you that we <strong>succumbed<\/strong> to 2 of the great activities proposed.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Swim with fur seals<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We were immediately attracted by the <strong>unic<\/strong> and original character of this activity. Before arriving in New Zealand we had never wondered about this <strong>possibility<\/strong>. It was on arriving in this country, and seeing these marine <strong>mammals<\/strong> everywhere, that we wondered whether <strong>swimming<\/strong> with them could be dangerous or not. Especially that when they are on land they are easily frightened and can become aggressive, this is also the case when there are new borns. So we decided to meet the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sealswimkaikoura.co.nz\/Photo-Gallery\/\"><strong>Seal Swim<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; team and try the <strong>experiment<\/strong> by their side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2134\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Seal_swim_Kaikoura.jpg\" alt=\"Seal_swim_Kaikoura\" width=\"970\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Seal_swim_Kaikoura.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Seal_swim_Kaikoura-300x102.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Seal_swim_Kaikoura-768x261.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After giving us the right <strong>informations<\/strong> on the behavior to adopt with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nz-fur-seal\">fur seals<\/a>, we are equipped with wetsuits, fins, mask, snorkel and diving cowl and we climb, in small committee, in the yellow bus to join the boat, also yellow, in direction of the <strong>peninsula<\/strong>. As soon as the specimens are located, and after taking care to check that there are no vulnerable new borns in the group, we <strong>dive<\/strong> and we join them quietly.\u00a0The whole thing is to swim <strong>calmly<\/strong>, without sudden move, to get <strong>closer<\/strong> without trying to touch them, and this is where the magic operates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2138\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sealswim_team_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Sealswim_team_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sealswim_team_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sealswim_team_Kaikoura.jpg 511w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Curious by nature, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nz-fur-seal\">fur seals<\/a> come to swim and dance <strong>gracefully<\/strong> around you and look at you with their big <strong>mischievous<\/strong> eyes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s simply an amazing and intense experience, all in sweetness and emotions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We can only <strong>recommend<\/strong> this activity for young and old. This only requires a little of patience and <strong>respect<\/strong> because, for once, it&#8217;s us who enter their world. A big thanks to the family business &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sealswimkaikoura.co.nz\/Photo-Gallery\/\"><strong>Seal Swim<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; that makes this activity possible in <strong>great<\/strong> conditions, in small group with a friendly and <strong>fun<\/strong> team.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Swim with dolphins<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>If swimming with the wild Kaikoura&#8217;s fur seals has something of unical, there is a child&#8217;s <strong>dream<\/strong> that many carry and only wish to <strong>realize<\/strong>. An opportunity that few would refuse, the one of swimming among <strong>wild<\/strong> dolphins. Because yes, swim, pet or get pulled by a dolphin aileron, it&#8217;s possible in many places where these poor cetaceans are held <strong>captive<\/strong> and trained for the pleasure of visitors. But what &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.encounterkaikoura.co.nz\/dolphins\/\"><strong>Dolphins encounter<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; offers it&#8217;s really to bring us to <strong>meet<\/strong> the wild dolphins of Kaikoura.\u00a0There is no question here of any human process to attract the animals but rather to <strong>insert<\/strong> us, as human beings, into their element, at their own pace and at their good will. It&#8217;s really an <strong>attractive<\/strong> activity for which we quickly got informations, there are limited places by boat either as simple <strong>observer<\/strong> or as <strong>swimmer<\/strong>. Unfortunately, strong of its success, we have been put on a waiting list.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In high season, the places are scarce and the boats being limited, everything was reserved on almost 2 weeks. So we were placed on the waiting list to claim a place as &#8220;swimmer&#8221;. In other words, you must take precautions and book the activity well before arriving in Kaikoura.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2145\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphins_Kaikoura.jpg\" alt=\"Dolphins_Kaikoura\" width=\"970\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphins_Kaikoura.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphins_Kaikoura-300x98.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphins_Kaikoura-768x252.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So we left for <strong>Christchurch<\/strong> terribly disappointed, but we didn&#8217;t intend to stay on Kaikoura for so long. After 3 days on Christchurch, preparing our arrival on a new woofing and taking dispositions for the van sale, we received a <strong>phone<\/strong> call informing us that 2 places had been freed to swim with the dolphins in Kaikoura the next day. That sounded good enough for us, we defered from one day our arrival in woofing, and we go back to Kaikoura (2.5 hours by road).<br \/>\nThe next day we present ourselves at &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.fr\/Attraction_Review-g255374-d533952-Reviews-Dolphin_Encounter-Kaikoura_Canterbury_Region_South_Island.html\"><strong>Dolphin encounter<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; at the scheduled time, we are put in groups, swimmers on one side, observers on the other. A little tour in the cinema room for a clear summary of the rules to adopt and the attitude to have to attract the dolphins attention and <strong>play<\/strong> with them, then we get equip before going on the bus to the <strong>boat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2148\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphin_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dolphin_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphin_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphin_Kaikoura-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dolphin_Kaikoura.jpg 829w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the dolphins shoals are located, the boat overtakes them, stops on their trajectory and throws us into the water. In a few seconds we are surrounded by <strong>hundreds<\/strong> of wild dolphins and we quickly understand that we are nothing. If they don&#8217;t want to come and <strong>have fun<\/strong> with us then they go their way very fast, barely time to blink.\u00a0However, if they want to make the &#8220;<strong>race<\/strong>&#8221; they start to turn around us and we have to follow their <strong>rhythm<\/strong> to create the game, it can last several seconds, and obviously we never win. But, for god&#8217;s sake, these few seconds of play with these dolphins can turn into a moment of pure and <strong>absolute happiness<\/strong>. Then we go back on the boat when the siren sounds, then repeat the operation about 4 times.<\/p>\n<p>If the moment is magic, it is also challenging.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/orcas_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"orcas_Kaikoura\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/orcas_Kaikoura-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/orcas_Kaikoura.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Jump into the open sea, swim, dive, <strong>breath<\/strong> by the snorkel, have fun with the dolphins, <strong>fight<\/strong> against the combination that makes us float to enjoy the moment, it is clearly <strong>physical<\/strong>. Add to this the excitement mixed with the apprehension and you get completely exhausted, but also <strong>filled<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe also had the chance, as a <strong>bonus<\/strong>, to fall on the period when the <strong>orcas<\/strong> passed by Kaikoura and our captain took us to them so that we could also enjoy this <strong>show<\/strong>, which also allowed us to contemplate the <strong>albatrosses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Given the unusually large size of this article, we think that any kind of conclusion about Kaikoura would be superfluous.
