We will have the pleasure to discover this <strong>peninsula<\/strong> and its beautiful sceneries out of season, since we went there at the end of June. A choice that will prive us of swimming on these <strong>idyllic<\/strong> beaches but which allowed us, sometimes, to be totally <strong>isolated<\/strong> and to feel alone in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-1-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral Cove - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-1-300x222.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-1.jpg 538w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Cathedral Cove \u2013 Hahei<\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop will start at the inevitable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoromandel.com\/activities\/must-do\/cathedral-cove\/\">Cathedral Cove<\/a>, recognized by all users of Windows 10 as one of the most <strong>beautiful<\/strong> wallpapers, it is also the inescapable point of the region. A small walk that will take you to the <strong>cliff<\/strong> dug with its cave and its white sandy beach. A beautiful <strong>decor<\/strong>, not to be missed obviously, and where we can easily spend a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Hot water beach &#8211; Hahei \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-853 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Hot water beach - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most famous activity of Coromandel, which is also part of the <strong>indispensables<\/strong>, is to go on this beach known as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoromandel.com\/activities\/must-do\/hot-water-beach\/\">hot water<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do not forget to go there 2 hours before or after the low tide.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After paying parking fees, $ 4 (coins) $ 4.5 (credit card), and took possesion of a <strong>shovel<\/strong> (rentable on site), direction the beach. As soon as the heat is felt under your little relaxed toes, it is time to stop and dig your <strong>natural jacuzzi<\/strong>. Beware you have to <strong>dig<\/strong> on the right place, sometimes the water is scorching. We had to dig two pools to mix cold and hot and fall on the ideal <strong>temperature<\/strong>. But it was awesome !<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Coromandel Town\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of the same name as the peninsula, it is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coromandeltown.co.nz\/\">pretty little town<\/a> of <strong>colonial<\/strong> style. The place is lovely and must, probably, be crowded in summer thanks to the pretty <strong>bays<\/strong> that surround it. A small path leads to the top of a hill in 15 minutes and offers a superb <strong>view<\/strong> of the place. We enjoyed a wonderful sunset there. Apart from this, the city has, unfortunately, no great <strong>interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-859\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Coromandel town\" width=\"970\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-3-1.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-3-1-300x90.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-3-1-768x230.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Colville<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The coastal road that leads to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coromandeltown.co.nz\/\">Colville<\/a> from Coromandel town is <strong>splendid<\/strong>, we made several stops to enjoy the <strong>views<\/strong>. We chose to stop in Colville for its low cost camping and to protect us from bad weather. It&#8217;s a <strong>village<\/strong> with a coffee shop and a general multi-services store, but nothing else. It is simply a <strong>stop<\/strong> on the road that leads to the northern tip of Coromandel.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A hamlet which represents the last possibility of refueling, to be avoided in view of the prices practiced.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Stony bay \u2013 Port Charles\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Stony bay - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-4-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-4.jpg 587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We chose to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/stonycampsite\">Stony Bay<\/a> to take the start for the 6-hour <strong>hike<\/strong> to Fletcher Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Many take the departure from Fletcher Bay directly, but we opted for Stony Bay to avoid unnecessary kilometers on the, sometimes damaged, gravel roads that lead to the northern tip.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the night at Sandy Bay, without <strong>souls<\/strong> who live, and a storm raged all night. In the early morning, the <strong>road<\/strong> that leads to the start of the hike was unfortunately flooded, so not accessible. So we could not do the planned <strong>walk<\/strong>, with a bit of regret cause that seemed to be beautiful. In any case Stony bay is a very <strong>beautiful spot<\/strong>, even under the gray sky, this walk must certainly be worth it.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-866 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-5-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tuateawa - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-5-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-5.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Along the way\u2026\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>On the <strong>way<\/strong> bringing us to the south of the peninsula towards the town of Coromandel, we chose to pass, this time, by the coast, to discover new landscapes. We made 3 stops: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/waikawaucampsite\">Waikawau<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tuateawa.tripod.com\/\">Tuateawa<\/a> (our unexpected crush) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetreasury.org.nz\/Kennedy\/Kennedy.htm\">Kennedy Bay<\/a>, which are very nice sites to schedule a small stop along the way and <strong>admire<\/strong> the scenery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Whangapoua \u2013 New chums Beach\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A small hike a little bit difficult since it is necessary to take a path of <strong>slippery<\/strong> rocks to reach a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoromandel.com\/activities\/must-do\/new-chum-beach\/\">hidden bay<\/a>. So you have to take your time and stay focused on your feet, no need for an <strong>exceptional<\/strong> physical condition just put on good shoes, and frankly, it&#8217;s worth the detour. We had the chance to experience the wonderful &#8220;New Chums Beach&#8221; with no one. A huge white sandy beach, a <strong>wild bay<\/strong>, we enjoyed a good time contemplating this beautiful landscape.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For us this stop is unavoidable for the beauty of the place.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-869\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-6.jpg\" alt=\"New chums beach - Coromandel\" width=\"970\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-6.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-6-300x90.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-6-768x230.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/h5>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Otama Beach &#038; Opito Bay\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Immense white sand beaches served by a <strong>gravel<\/strong> road. There is nothing to do except admire the view. At the tip of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/au\/article\/kuaotunu-to-opito-bay-in-the-coromandel\/\">Opito Bay<\/a>, it is possible to take a small path, the <strong>access<\/strong> is on the end of the beach. Short but steep, it leads to the summit of the tip in order to discover the bay as a whole. The landscape is <strong>lovely<\/strong>, as always.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Whitianga<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-873\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-7-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Whitianga - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-7-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-7.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A real <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitianga.co.nz\/\">town<\/a>, quite extensive, with shops and everything you might <strong>need<\/strong>. The downtown area has nothing remarkable, but the <strong>marina<\/strong> with its small enclosed harbor is <strong>charming<\/strong>. It is possible to take a ferry to reach the other shore and <strong>take a walk<\/strong> along a small coastal path. With its long sandy beaches, there is no doubt that Whitianga must be a popular <strong>seaside<\/strong> resort. Close to all the remarkable sites of the peninsula, with many nautical <strong>activities<\/strong> and proximity services, this is an easy and <strong>convenient<\/strong> drop-off point.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Broken Hills\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-874 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-8-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Broken hills - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-8-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-8.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To finish our loop around the peninsula, we wanted to test the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/coromandel\/places\/coromandel-forest-park\/things-to-do\/kauaeranga-kauri-trail\/\">Pinnacles<\/a>&#8221; hike. Unfortunately, the site is being reorganized due to severe <strong>weather<\/strong> damages therefore the access is closed until further notices.<br \/>\nSo we headed to the little walk of broken hills. A little stiff, it has the particularity to take us to the <strong>top<\/strong> of the hill sometimes passing by the ways of old <strong>mines<\/strong>. It is thus possible to cross the mountain by a long <strong>tunnel<\/strong> of 500m, unlit, but relatively arranged, inhabited by <strong>glow-worms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Claustrophobes abstain! This remains, nevertheless, an interesting sensory experience.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Waihi\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-877\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-9-1-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"Waihi - Coromandel\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-9-1-300x194.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-9-1.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waihi.org.nz\/\">city of Waihi<\/a> is currently <strong>remarkable<\/strong> only thanks to the former gold and silver mine which contributed mostly to the growth and <strong>wealth<\/strong> of New Zealand. &#8220;Martha Mine&#8221; was indeed one of the most important <strong>precious<\/strong> metal mines of the world in the last century. It is therefore possible to visit the <strong>inside<\/strong> in exchange of several tens of dollars, or to borrow the free footpath to go around the mine&#8217;s <strong>crater<\/strong> and see some vestiges. This is the second option we have chosen. Along the way, small panels in the form of &#8220;questions \/ answers&#8221; allow you to learn more about the <strong>historical<\/strong> past and future of the mine, in a <strong>fun way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Waihi Beach\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>9 km of sandy beach, and one of the safest places for <strong>surfing<\/strong>. However, this is not what we kept in mind, since we preferred to take the <strong>path<\/strong> that runs along the coast to end in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/bay-of-plenty\/places\/orokawa-scenic-reserve\/things-to-do\/orokawa-scenic-reserve-short-walking-tracks\/\">orakawa bay<\/a>. A pleasant walk which leads to a <strong>paradisiacal<\/strong> beach that is comparable to New Chums Beach.<br \/>\nIt takes only 45 minutes to reach this little <strong>preserved paradise<\/strong> which reveals a setting worthy of the most beautiful Hollywood movies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-878\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-10.jpg\" alt=\"Orokawa bay - Coromandel\" width=\"970\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-10.jpg 970w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-10-300x90.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-10-768x230.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">Karangahake Gorge\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We finished our loop in the footsteps of the gold <strong>seekers<\/strong> through two strolls in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoromandel.com\/activities\/must-do\/karangahake-gorge\/\">Karangahake gorges <\/a>that took us back in time. At the base of the Coromandel peninsula, very close to Waihi, this ancient <strong>mining reveals<\/strong>, wagons, tunnels, rails and vestiges of another time. We felt like real <strong>explorers<\/strong>. We were conquered by this place of character that brung us in childhood adventures for a few hours. Do not hesitate to come and <strong>stop<\/strong> there if you have the opportunity, especially since the gorges are also very <strong>beautiful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-880\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-.jpg\" alt=\"Karangahake - Coromandel\" width=\"980\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre-.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre--300x158.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lecoeurelephant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sans-titre--768x404.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This gives you a good overview of our itinerary around the Coromandel Peninsula with our little van, and that may <strong>inspire<\/strong> you in your future planning.
